A Poem for My Momma
Sacrifice. The word I think of when I think of you.
Working tirelessly to provide, your whole life through.
…
Your youth was cut short when my life began,
but I know you would go back and do it all again.
…
The struggles, the hard work, the stress, the tears,
overshadowed no doubt, by the love and the joy, of those younger years.
…
Traveling to adventures, milk shakes and fries,
spearmint-scented purses, V8 juice and moon pies.
…
Surprise geese and ducks, pet bunnies, new dogs, and best cats named Simon that ran away,
Countless horseshow days and sunset practice rides; you filled my life with rich experiences that impact me to this day.
…
Because of you I know about work-ethic, elbow-grease, doing things the right way or not at all,
how to clean a floor on your hands and knees, hospital-cornered sheets, and how to shovel manure from a stall.
…
I know a lot about responsibility, and the lessons tied up in failing- because of the ways you let me learn,
How to be a lady above all, take care of myself, and hunt a bargain with the money that you earn.
…
Road trips back and forth to Tennessee to visit roots
and loved ones there,
books on tape and late night talks to stay awake,
are some memorable times we share.
…
Chicken pox on holidays, and throwing up in your hands on others,
Easter Bunny dressing up and you loving to give good gifts, you are just that kind of mother.
…
Seeing you lose your momma is a memory that will never leave,
Reminds me that the bond between mother and daughter is quite a gift to receive.
…
Those teenage years I was busy, but you always supported me,
Leaving behind our shared hobby of horses, for dance, and student council, and a boyfriend, you just let me, be me.
…
College days, nursing school, pageant years,
and moving numerous times,
Your constant love, support, and devotion,
means more than words can find.
…
Isn’t it appropriate that your wisdom got me to my life-long love?
That night at Flip’s was meant to be, divinely orchestrated from above.
…
You made sure our wedding was magical and magnificent, unforgettable and grand,
The sacrifices you kept hidden, are greater
than I even now understand.
…
Now that I am a mother, and six precious girls call me mommy,
I have begun to see the depths of love that you must have for me.
…
Although selflessness isn’t always easy, it’s a worthwhile price to pay,
being a safe, loving place for your children to land, is a privilege, day after day.
…
I love seeing you be a MiMi to our girls; to them you are so dear,
What a gift to me it is to see you love them well, and for us to live so near; A mother’s love is never-ending and you’ve made that abundantly clear.
…
So a ‘thank you’ is in order, for all you’ve done and continue to do,
I am grateful to have you as my mother, and pray the way I’ve lived my life fills you with pride and brings honor to you.
…
I love you, Mom.
Love,
Jenni
